Stay Strong to Prevent Falls

Despite what many think, falling is not a normal part of aging. You can help prevent falls by getting regular check-ups with your primary care provider, ensuring your home is set up safely, and, of course, doing the right exercises.

Staying strong and having good balance is especially important for older adults. Anyone of any age or ability can work on their balance and strength and improve their fall risk. The stronger your legs are the better your balance will be.

 

What are some exercises to do to improve your strength and balance?

The best part of these exercises is that they can be done anywhere, any time!

 

Great Lower Extremity Strength Exercises

  • Lunges
  • Standing heel raises
  • Sit to stand from a sturdy chair

 

Balance Exercises

  • Walking backwards
  • Side stepping
  • Standing on one leg

*It is always a good idea to stand next to a sturdy chair or countertop to hold onto.

 

Walking is also an excellent exercise for older adults. To improve your strength while walking, you will want to challenge yourself to walk up and down hills or stairs. When that becomes easy, you can increase your speed for parts of your walks. Finding a walking partner improves your accountability and mental health!
