Embracing Holiday Traditions With Senior Loved Ones

Recalling holiday traditions of the past brings fond memories of happy times spent with family and friends. But as our senior loved ones age, it’s important to make modifications to traditions or focus on activities that are more accessible to ensure they can fully participate and feel connected to the celebrations. By adapting to their needs, we honor their place in the family and create meaningful opportunities for everyone to take part in holiday fun.   Here are some ways to make sure every member of your family has a role to play in making cherished holiday memories.

Enjoy Multigenerational Fun

Activities that bring the youngest and oldest members of your family together can have benefits for both. Older family members can feel a sense of purpose and belonging as they engage with younger family members to pass on longstanding family traditions, and younger family members can feel a sense of connection and continuity as they learn about their family history. Baking family recipes together, creating holiday crafts, decorating for the holiday, singing carols, driving around the neighborhood to view holiday lights or watching favorite movies are all activities that young and old can participate in regardless of mobility issues or other limitations.

Focus on Storytelling

The holidays provide a perfect time for senior loved ones to share their stories of the past with younger generations eager to know what grandma was like when she was their age. Pulling out heirloom ornaments or decorations, looking through old photo albums or watching home movies can spark rich memories for older family members, allowing them to share their experiences. These stories not only bring the family closer together, they also create a sense of pride in the traditions and values that have been passed down through generations.

Acknowledge Feelings of Grief and Keep Memories Alive

The holidays can be a bittersweet time, especially for seniors who may have lost many close family members or friends over the years. It is important to acknowledge grief during this season and find ways to honor the memory of loved ones who have passed away. Sharing stories, displaying photos, and incorporating their favorite traditions can keep their presence alive in meaningful ways. For younger family members, who might not have had the opportunity to meet them, sharing memories provides a bridge to the past, and ensures that their legacy will live on in the next generation.

The holiday season is a time for making memories and connections with the ones we cherish. By adapting traditions and activities to make sure senior loved ones can participate, giving them an opportunity to share family stories, fostering multigenerational activities, and remembering and honoring family members who have passed, we create a celebration that can be enjoyed by all generations.
