Five Ways to Boost Your Spiritual Wellness

We spend so much time focused on our physical and mental health, which is extremely important, but what about our spiritual health and wellness?  Our mind, body and spirit are all deeply entwined, so the health of one can impact the health of another.  Spirituality won’t cure your injury or illness, but it can help you cope with the pain and guide you through the healing process.

What is Spiritual Wellness?

Spiritual Wellness expands a sense of purpose and meaning in life, including one’s morals and ethics.  But it is important to note that spiritual wellness is different for everyone; there is not one path to follow.

Carrie Wester, a chaplain with Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, states, “Some people experience spirituality through religion, but religion isn’t the only tool to experience it.  Spirituality is a sense of internal wellbeing and how you connect with something greater than yourself – whether that’s a higher power, nature, music, art or humanity as a whole.  It’s the ideals and beliefs you from throughout your life that form your own unique spirituality.”

Five Ways to Boost Your Spiritual Wellness

  1. Meditate – Meditation is one of the easiest ways to practice spiritual wellness.  Meditating for as little as 10 minutes daily can reduce stress, anxiety and depression. It can also increase your mood and mindfulness.
  2. Volunteer – A great way to feel connected to your spirituality is to give back.  Find a cause that means something to you and volunteer your time.  Helping others gives you a sense of purpose and gratitude for all you have.
  3. Focus on your hobbies – Doing what you enjoy can help bring back a sense of purpose and keep you focused on the moment.
  4. Spend time in nature – Whether you live in a warm or cold climate, getting outside daily can boost your spiritual wellness.  It is a great way to disconnect from your day-to-day stresses and focus on the beauty around you.  Even a few minutes of breathing in fresh air can be therapeutic.
  5. Connect with your faith community – Find an organization that shares your beliefs and discuss how you can get involved.  This could be done in person or over the phone.  Meeting and connecting with like-minded people can provide additional support and encouragement.
