Getting Healthy in the New Year

After a year of feeling like the world was getting back to “normal” post COVID, many of us celebrated the holidays with an extra cookie…or maybe three!  But now that the season of overindulging has come to an end, it’s time to renew our focus on practicing healthier habits in 2023.  Following these few tips can help you be successful conquering those New Year’s Resolutions.

Be Specific – Instead of just saying you want to lose weight, be clear about how much weight you want to lose, when you want to achieve that goal and how you are going to do it.  For example, “I’m going to lose 6 pounds in the next 2 months, and I am committing to walking 2 miles daily to help get me there.”

Make it realistic – Make sure your goals are attainable and doable.  Making the small changes will yield longer results without making you feel frustrated.

Track your progress – Keep a diary/journal to track your progress and keep you motivated.

Share your goals – Talk to friends and family about the goals you want to achieve, ask them to help hold you accountable or better yet, ask them to join you in the journey.

Stay Positive – Everyone has setbacks, be sure to stay focused and stay positive.  Each day is a new day, be kind to yourself throughout this journey.

Here are our top health tips for a better YOU in 2023!

Get enough sleep – Older adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.  Lack of sleep can affect your immune system, appetite, ability to focus and overall mood.  To improve your sleep, try a few of these suggestions:

  • Exercise daily.
  • Avoid caffeine after 3 p.m.
  • Avoid large meals late at night.
  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.

Exercise Daily – Exercise is not only good for your physical health, but it is also important for your mental health.  It can help you stay strong to continue to do the things you love.  Exercise also improves your overall mood and can help improve cognition.

Challenge your Brain – Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise.  Challenge yourself by learning something new, start a new hobby, join a book club or commit to doing a daily crossword puzzle.  Keeping your brain active will keep your mind sharp!
